STATE REP. ANGIE NIXON ENDORSES MATTHEW MONTAVON FOR FL-17

Prominent Florida leader rallies behind Montavon, citing shared commitment to servant leadership, defending democracy, and unifying communities

SARASOTA, FL, July 14 — The Montavon for Congress campaign announced a major endorsement from Florida State Rep. Angie Nixon, a champion for civil rights, voting access, and working families. This endorsement signals growing momentum and unified support for Montavon as the candidate best prepared to defend democracy, fight for the public interest, and bring true representation to Florida’s 17th Congressional District.

Rep. Nixon, widely respected across the state for her fearless advocacy and servant leadership, has put in tremendous work defending Floridians against political overreach. Notably, Nixon stood on the front lines against partisan gerrymandering, leading historic protests and demanding fair maps that protect the voices of everyday citizens. Her endorsement reflects a powerful alignment of two leaders dedicated to community-first public service.

Matthew Montavon, whose extensive career includes 27 years fighting hunger and poverty with the United Nations and decades of local community service, welcomed the endorsement, emphasizing that Nixon’s courage is exactly what inspires his own and Congressional bid.

"Receiving the endorsement of Rep. Angie Nixon is a profound honor," said Matthew Montavon. "Angie has shown us what true courage looks like. When our democratic systems were threatened by gerrymandering and restrictive policies, she stood up and fought back for the greater good. In Congress, I am committed to bringing that same fierce Progressive stance to our democracy, protecting voting rights, and ensuring that every single resident of District 17 has a voice that cannot be gerrymanded or ignored."

As the August primary approaches, the Montavon campaign continues to build a diverse, grassroots movement focused on lowering costs for families, guaranteeing reproductive freedom, and restoring ethical oversight to Washington. He has pledged not to take any corporate PAC money and has received the endorsement of Americans for Democracy because of his strong stance against the PAC-funded incumbent, Greg Steube.

This is my commitment to Social Security

  • I pledge to preserve Social Security for current retirees and ensure that it will be there for future generations.

  • I oppose any increase in the retirement age and any lowering of  benefits.

  • Democrats enacted Social Security in the first place. I am a lifelong Democrat, unlike my opponents, and I will vehemently protect Social Security.

  • To keep the Social Security trust fund solvent, I support raising the tax cap on earnings and taxing all income, including capital gains.

  • Congress should ensure that Social Security offices are fully funded, so that seniors do not face any loss or delay in services.

  • Social Security annual increases should be linked to the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics) so that payments keep pace with seniors’ true cost of living.
