Momentum Building Across FL-17
As we move closer toward summer and the road to November continues, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the people of Florida’s 17th Congressional District are ready for leadership that listens, shows up, and fights for everyday families.
This month marked a major milestone for the campaign: Matthew Montavon successfully submitted all required petitions to officially qualify for the ballot. We want to sincerely thank every volunteer, supporter, voter, and community member who believed in this movement enough to sign, organize, and stand beside us.
While some campaigns are still scrambling to find their footing, this campaign continues to grow because it was built from the ground up by the people. The support we’ve received reflects something bigger than politics — it reflects a belief in freedom, accountability, unity, and a future where government truly works for the people again.
Matthew is honored by the trust this community continues to place in him, and he is ready to serve FL-17 in Congress.
Out and About in FL-17
Hibiscus Festival — Punta Gorda (May 1–3)
Matthew Montavon spent the beginning of May at the Hibiscus Festival in Punta Gorda connecting directly with voters, hearing concerns from residents, and sharing his vision for the future of FL-17.The conversations were honest, passionate, and deeply meaningful.“I’m grateful to the volunteers who made it possible. I heard it clearly: people want peace, not more conflict abroad, and real solutions to the struggles we face at home. We must do better. My name is Matthew Montavon, and I am ready to deliver for FL-17 in Congress.”Events like these continue to remind us that voters are looking for leadership that values diplomacy, economic stability, and practical solutions over division and political theater.
Standing Together for Justice & Community
Payne Park Vigil — Sarasota
One of the most heartfelt moments of the month was attending the Payne Park Vigil in Sarasota, where members of the community gathered in reflection and in demand for justice in solidarity with the vigils held at the Everglades Detention Center where many people are held in cruel and inhumane conditions.Matthew believes one of the greatest strengths of our district is its diversity. Every culture, every background, and every walk of life deserves respect, understanding, and representation.
In times where division too often dominates headlines, moments like these remind us that unity and compassion are still stronger.
Venice Support Continues to Grow
A special thank you to everyone who attended Venice Liberal Libations and continues supporting the campaign throughout Venice and the surrounding communities.
Matthew deeply values every corner of District 17, and Venice has consistently shown incredible energy, engagement, and support throughout this journey. We are grateful for the relationships being built and the conversations continuing every week.
We also want to thank the Women’s Democratic Club and the many organizations, activists, volunteers, and local leaders we’ve connected with throughout the campaign trail this spring.
As summer approaches, we are energized by the growing coalition of citizens ready to move this district forward together.Let’s march to the finish line.
Building Connections in Newtown
The campaign was honored to continue building relationships throughout the Newtown community in Sarasota this month.
We were blessed to connect with respected community leaders such as former Sarasota Mayor Willie Shaw and well-known business owner and activist Jetson Grimes. Their dedication to uplifting the community and creating opportunities for future generations continues to inspire meaningful conversations about progress and representation.
One highlight was a community fish fry event where residents gathered together to discuss the future of Newtown, civic engagement, and the power of voting.
These conversations matter.
Matthew believes representation begins with showing up, listening, and ensuring communities understand not only their voting power, but also which candidates are truly willing to fight for them and walk alongside them.
Growing Relationships & Expanding the Movement
Alex Vindman Fundraiser
This month also included an opportunity to attend an Alex Vindman event and connect with leaders, organizers, and advocates committed to protecting democracy and moving the country in a positive direction. The Democrats have so many amazing candidates at every level this year!
Building relationships with people who are passionate about public service and meaningful change is an important part of strengthening this movement for FL-17.
Reaching More Voters Through Media
May was also a strong month for media growth and voter engagement.
Matthew joined Mark Davis for Congress FL-16 for an informative and engaging podcast discussion focused on democracy, the future of Florida, and the issues impacting working families across the state.
He also enjoyed a podcast on Stroke 101 hosted by Big Gee, and had an interview with WSLR.The conversations reached a large audience and helped continue spreading the message of unity, accountability, and service throughout the region.
Meet & Greet Sarasota — May 23
The Sarasota Meet & Greet for local candidates was another powerful reminder of the momentum building across this district.
What stood out most was not just the candidates present, but the overwhelming passion from the people in the room. Citizens from across the community showed up ready to engage, ask questions, and support leaders who genuinely care about the future of our democracy.
Matthew especially appreciated the conversations, encouragement, and trust shown throughout the evening.
Most importantly — thank you for believing in this campaign.

Besides the above there were forums, social events, community events with the Veterans for Common Sense, Equal Ground and NAACP, as well as the day to day connecting to voters across District 17.
Looking Ahead to June
As we head into June, the campaign is continuing to expand outreach efforts across Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee Counties. More events, community conversations, volunteer opportunities, and voter engagement initiatives are on the way.
This movement continues to grow because of people like you.
